Rising UK unemployment figures this month [August 2011] are not going to make life easier for recruiters, who already receive mail bags full of applications for any existing vacancy, let alone speculative correspondence. Figures released this month by the Office of National Statistics for April to June this year (http://www.statistics.gov.uk/pdfdir/lmsuk0811.pdf`) reveal that while the employment rate is just over 70% and there are 29 million employed people in the UK, the number of unemployed has risen to 2.49 million.
This means that nearly 8% of the national workforce is looking for work, with a larger number of women in the mix than ever before. Some of this can be attributed to public sector redundancies, which are starting to appear on the statistical radar. The past quarter saw a further 21,000 women register, bringing the female jobless total to a 20-year high of just over one million.
Further public sector redundancies and the contraction of public sector job markets will continue to squeeze out people whose lack of experience in the private sector will make it harder for them to adapt successfully.
These are compelling arguments for using an established logistics recruitment specialist like BiS-Henderson.
Faced with a stalling economy, there were 22,000 fewer job vacancies in the April to June quarter, with a total of 449,000 during the quarter. Recruiters for logistics vacancies are looking for a very specific set of skills combined with personality and teamwork traits that deliver results reliably and are harder to spot in a CV.
It takes operational experience to spot these qualities in applicants, whose CVs might otherwise look very similar. The current economic climate just guarantees that there will be more applications to sift through with less chance of spotting the right applicants to interview. As a specialist supply chain and logistics recruitment agency, BiS-Henderson does more than tick boxes and count beans to select the right applicants: it understands the kind of people that will be right for the job.
